Little is known about Thomas’s past. He was born on the first of December to his mother, Lizzie Gaskins, and father, Thomas Collins. Thomas served as a Private for the United States Colored Troops from 1864 to 1865, for company D 6th N.C. Colored Troops. After the war, he continued on to be a laborer. He was known to be a widow by the time of his death, on December 1st 1917.
