The Grimesley/Grimsley cemetery, located in Springfield, Virginia was found to be neglected, overgrown and a dumping ground during an August 15, 2009 FCCPA survey visit.

The Grimsleys were a family of farmers, whose spelling of the last name changed between censuses and Grimsley families. Research has not shown the familial relationship between Augustine Grimsley and James Grimesley, whom the census taker in 1860 records as James “Grimsley.” In the 1820 census, a Levi Grimsley is recorded in Fairfax, with no age or occupation. This is what gives genealogists headaches.

This once beautiful cemetery, located originally on farmland, is surrounded by suburbia today. Vandals have toppled over all the markers, save an obelisk. Pieces of markers have been moved from their orginal locations. Dumping of trees and bushes probably hide other markers and burials.
