ALL IN THE FAMILY- KISSING COUSINS

Davises abound in Fairfax County. In the 1860 census, there were 22 male Davises listed as head of a household. In the 1870 census, the number had increased to 40.

The Ashford/Davis, Davis/Lewis and Davis/Marshall family cemeteries are located miles apart in the Fairfax Station area of Fairfax County, but are all connected and related.

Some examples:

  • William H. Lewis was married to Jane Sarah Davis, daughter of William and Maria Davis. William H. Lewis died May 1, 1876 and is buried in the Davis/Lewis Cemetery. On June 17, 1886, widow Jane Sarah Davis Lewis married George Davis, Jr. (officially becoming Jane Sarah Davis Lewis Davis). George Davis, Jr. is buried in the Ashford/Davis cemetery. Jane Sarah Davis Lewis, who died in 1912, is buried in the Davis/Lewis Cemetery with her first husband, William and their children.
  • Henry E. Davis married Cordelia, daughter of Rezin and Sarah Davis. Her married name would be Cordelia Davis Davis. Cordelia died of consumption on September 15, 1868. On January 6, 1870, Henry married Cordelia’s sister, Catharine. Twenty-five years later, as a widower for the second time, at the age of 50, Henry married 28 year old Kate Lewis on February 7, 1895 at the home of George E. Davis.
  • In 1891, Amanda E. Lewis, daughter of William and Jane S. Lewis, married Calvin H. Davis, son of George Davis Jr. and his wife Ann. Amanda and Calvin are buried in the Davis/Lewis Cemetery. Calvin’s parents, George and (Rebecca) Ann are buried in the Ashford /Davis cemetery.

Noting the number of unmarked burials in both the Ashford/Davis and Davis/Lewis cemetery, one might safely presume that these burials to be more Davises and Lewises.

FCCPA’s June 19, 2009 survey of these three cemeteries found them well tended and maintained.
